Orbit Change Maneuvers

Fuel is a valuable resource for space assets and is often a limited resource onboard. Therefore, when a satellite finds itself in the wrong orbit or must maneuver for safety reasons, the lifespan of the satellite, as well as the time and effort from mission control, take a hit. In such cases, KMI is able to offer a hand in relocation services. Whether it is changing the orbit of a satellite whose OTV malfunctioned, or safely relocating it out of potential harm’s way, Laelaps provides a solution.

Thanks to the patented end-effector being capable of non-destructive capture and release, regardless of docking structure, an operational satellite can be moved from where it is to where it needs to be and still continue its mission. For such a mission, Laelaps would approach the target object, rendezvous and dock with it using the REACCH end-effector, utilize its propulsion system to transport the object to the desired location, release the grapple, and move on to the next mission. For larger maneuvers or orbit plane changes, KMI will utilize multiple Laelaps spacecraft to complete the mission.

Because the KMI spacecraft can release the target satellite, operators only need to pay for the contracted action and not the full cost of the spacecraft. Emergencies and mishaps happen, so KMI is here to provide a reusable, efficient, safe, and universal solution to mobility needs for satellites in space.
